Taking part in regular physical exercise is extremely beneficial to people with MS, whatever your level of ability. Exercise can help with weight control, fatigue management, emotional well being, co-ordination, circulation, bone strength and muscle strength, tone, and flexibility.

Being as active as possible is beneficial, whether this involves a regular exercise group, sport, or leisure activity.  Even keeping up with the housework can be good exercise!  However, there are certain types of activity that are thought to be particularly good for people with MS.  These include hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, weight training, and yoga.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a water-based activity that helps you to keep cool and move freely while you exercise.  One of the main benefits of hydrotherapy for people with MS is to reduce the impact on weight-bearing limbs, joints, and muscles in order to reduce the risk of injury or falls.

Pool activities such as water-walking, aqua-robics, and swimming can improve overall strength and increase fitness.

 

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is particularly helpful for people who have problems with balance or muscle control. Exercises recommended by a Physiotherapist can benefit joint mobility, muscle strength, and co-ordination, while accommodating any fatigue concerns.

Physiotherapy can also help people with MS to maintain good body posture and movement in order to prevent problems associated with reduced activity or muscle weakness.

 

Weight Training

Weight training can help people with MS to retain strength in muscles, joints, and bones while gaining fitness.  This can help with mobility, balance, and posture, and may prevent problems associated with reduced activity.

Before starting on a weight training programme it is important for people with MS to seek advice from a qualified health professional, such as a physiotherapist, to determine the types of activities that are appropriate for you.

 

Yoga

Yoga is an exercise involving a series of poses that are held for a period of time to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga also incorporates breathing and relaxation techniques. Many people find that yoga is beneficial for their energy levels, circulation, bladder and bowel control, and gives a general feeling of well being.

Yoga is particularly suited for MS because it can be adapted to suit any individual's level of ability – you don't need to be able to touch your toes to take part!
