My daughter is involved with an Anxiety Support Group.
There are 7 types of anxiety disorders:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder – often called G.A.D (as in Gee Ah Dee not gad). This disorder causes chronic anxiety, even when there is not outward cause of it.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – often called OCD (as in Oh Sea Dee not ocd). This disorder caused obsessive thoughts paired with compulsive actions designed to neutralize the anxiety caused by the obsessive thought.
- Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia – causes intense and often unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks are intense periods of anxiety, often with real physical symptoms such as heart palpitations that feel like heart attacks.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – is caused by a stressful event but ends up having anxiety around the event for longer term than just the event. Nightmares, and memories are anxiety filled.
- Social Anxiety Disorder – causes anxiety around social situations. This anxiety is more intense than the normal anxiety people have around unknown social situations.
- Specific Phobias – intense anxiety around something specific.
- Separation Anxiety – causes intense anxiety over being separated with an parent or care-giver.
In Children: Although children can also have all six of the above phobias they can have a phobia that only children get as well.
